Easy Steps to Convert Your PowerPoint to Google Slides

This image shows a computer screen with customized nametags displayed. The text at the bottom reads "Easy steps to convert your PowerPoint to Google Slides."

If you found an editable resource you LOVE, but don’t have PowerPoint, you’re in the right spot! Eight easy steps are all it takes to convert a PowerPoint to Google Slides. 🤯

I do want to give one disclaimer: Google Slides does NOT allow you to add any font of your choosing or embed fonts. So, the pretty fonts I have included in my editable PowerPoint files will not transfer over.

Honestly, that’s the main reason I do all of my work in PowerPoint instead of Google Slides.

BUT, if you are okay with finding an alternative font (and there are more choices than you think 😉), you can absolutely turn a PowerPoint file into a Google Slides one.

I’ve even created a video that walks through the steps. You can watch it here!

If that’s not your style, I’ve written the steps out with screenshots below. 😊

Step #1: Open Google Slides

The first step in this process is to open a new Google Slides presentation.

Pro Tip: if you type “slides.new” in a new tab on your internet browser, this automatically happens. 😉

Step #2: Delete All the Things

Next, select the text boxes on the screen and delete them.

This gives you a blank canvas to use!

Step #3: Change the Size of Your Presentation

Then, you want to change the size of your presentation so the PowerPoint slides look right when you bring them in.

To do this, click on “File” at the top of the toolbar.

Next, scroll down until you see the “Page Setup” option towards the bottom of the list.

This image shows the File menu dropdown and has the option "Page Setup" selected in a blank Google Slides presentation.

This will bring up a box with some different options in it.

You want to change the setting from “Widescreen” to “Custom” down at the bottom.

This image shows you need to select "Custom" when the page setup dialogue box pops up.

Then, add the dimensions of 11 x 8.5 inches.

This image shows the page setup as "custom" and 11 by 8.5 to ensure for the powerpoint to transfer to google slides effectively.

Again, this will help make the conversion of your PowerPoint to Google Slides super smooth.

Without this step, your slides will look a little scrunched or stretched.

Step #4: Import Your PowerPoint

Now we’re ready for the big step!

This is when we will start actually moving your PowerPoint to Google Slides!

To begin, click the “File” option on the toolbar again.

This time, you are looking for the “Import Slides” option towards the top.

This image shows the File menu dropdown and has the option "Import Slides" selected.

Step #5: Select Your PowerPoint

This will bring up another box.

Choose “Upload” at the top of your options.

This image shows an "Upload Files" box. This is what your computer will display when you are ready to upload your powerpoint file.

Now, you can either drag your file into this white box, or click the blue “Browse” button to find your PowerPoint file.

Step #6: Choose the Slides You Want to Add

Next, you can choose which slides you want to convert from PowerPoint to Google Slides.

You can either select them individually, or choose the “Select all slides” button at the top of the box.

This image shows what your screen looks like as you go to import slides from powerpoint to google slides.

Once you select your slides, click “Import slides” at the bottom of the box.

Step #7: Choose a Font

Now, your slides will look different from the PowerPoint files because the font isn’t coming with them.

Google will automatically change your font to its default “Arial”.

Chances are, you probably don’t like the look of that. 🤪

So, take some time to look through the different fonts Google has to offer to find one you like!

This image shows how to look at the fonts available on default Google Slides when converting a powerpoint to google slides.

If none of the fonts are catching your eye, don’t worry!

There are actually MORE fonts you can look through than what you originally see.

Click on “More fonts” up at the top of the font box of options.

This image shows how to access additional fonts when using Google Slides.

This brings up MANY more fonts to choose from.

But it helps to have something specific to search.

Here are some fonts I love that match the fonts I use in PowerPoint decently well in this blog post.

Step #8: Customize & Print

After figuring out which font you want to use, you are ready to put this Google Slides file to use!

First, make your desired edits by typing in the boxes.

Then, send it to the printer (or project your masterpiece) and you’re good to go!

Although work is involved, converting files from PowerPoint to Google Slides is a simple process!

This allows you to have beautiful PowerPoint files without needing a PowerPoint subscription!
