PK Classroom Setup: Ideas for Creating a Cozy, Playful Space

The year before kindergarten is a special time for our youngest learners. 💕

It looks different from kindergarten, and so your PK classroom setup should be different too! 

But trying to figure out how to place desks, where to put some play areas, and how to make it all feel cozy can be mind-boggling. 

Come check out this stunning PK classroom for inspiration for your own space!

She’s used the Modern Calm Colors decor theme to create a beautiful room for her little 4- and 5-year-olds! 

And her space is incredible. 🤩

Megan made every decision with her little learners at the forefront of her mind.

Like how she has created a large space in front of her whiteboard area for whole-group lessons.

These smaller wooden tables are PERFECT for a PK classroom and provide places for them to sit without taking up the entire room.

The rest of Megan’s room is filled with areas created for her little PK kids to learn, play, and create!! I’m SO excited to share them with you!!! 

PK Classroom Ideas

These young learners are just getting ready for kindergarten, which means they still LOVE playing, and it affects how you approach your PK classroom setup.

This image is a close-up of the pk classroom reading nook. There are baskets filled with stuffed animals and other soft pillows to be used as reading buddies in this area to make reading fun.

This reading corner not only has baskets for books, but also baskets filled with little stuffed animal reading buddies. 

How cute!!! And such a great, simple idea to help students feel safe and comfortable as they flip through picture books. 

Another PK classroom idea from Megan is creating a space where students can play pretend.

This small corner has been transformed into a little kitchen where students can cook up their magnificent dishes for their friends. 

Megan mentioned that many of these items were donated by PK families who had outgrown these toys in their own homes. So don’t hesitate to ask around to see if anyone in your school community has play sets.

This little wooden stand is the perfect place for SO many things as these PK students learn and explore.

Thinking through your whole group area is a key part of figuring out your PK classroom setup. 

Creating plenty of space for your little students to sit, but also have space to move around and be able to see your board. 

Placing read-alouds on the board is a great way to get students excited for what’s coming that day or week!

Adding Decor to Your PK Classroom Setup

Running through Megan’s PK classroom is a classroom decor theme that helps tie everything together. 

The Modern Calm Colors decor bundle is everywhere in her classroom, setting her students up for success each day. ✨

Staying Organized Using Classroom Decor

The Modern Calm Colors decor bundle is PERFECT for keeping your classroom looking amazing AND organized.

Underneath her whiteboard is a small storage area filled with bins. These bins would be SO easy to get mixed up without labels. 

Megan used the editable labels included in the Modern Calm Colors bundle for each bucket. Now she can grab the math or literacy bucket she’s looking for at a glance.

Off to the side of her whiteboard, Megan has placed another set of organization drawers with supplies. 

These Sterilite 3-drawer containers also have editable labels, so Megan (or her students) can easily grab the erasers or manipulatives needed for that particular lesson. 

Supporting Student Learning with Decor

Apart from the front of the classroom, there are other decor items supporting students sprinkled throughout this PK classroom.
